â€Å"American writer, Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) has been both extensive and profound. Even though his contemporary, James Russell Lowell, called him three-fifths genius and two-fifths sheer fudge (Schopen). This quote gives a sense of what kind of man Poe was, his life was full interesting ups and downs ultimately influencing his writing. Poe s poetry has become a staple in the American literature classroom because of the way he approaches his poetry. Edgar Allan Poe s poem â€Å"A Dream Within a Dream,† is a narrative poem connect to Poe s life, poem’s physical structure, literal meaning, poetic/literary devices, and theme telling a story about someone who has loved and lost. First, Poe s life is a roller coaster that played into his poetry. Poe s lead a very interesting life marrying his thirteen-year-old cousin, getting dishonorably discharged from the military and being orphaned at the age of three. Poe mainly writes short stories in his writing career. However, in Poe’s early and later years he leaned more towards writing poetry â€Å"A Dream Within a Dream,† comes in Poe’s latter half of his life. At the same time as â€Å"Poe s grotesque, supernatural tales and his tales of romanticism and rationalism were leading him to the metaphysical and poetic statement of the book Eureka (1848)† (Barney).
